Shadow of the Firstborn
Since magic is believed to be responsible for the Day of Fire, most of the general populace views it with suspicion. But the arcane energy released by Tommak's rift isn't going anywhere, so it is considered a fact of life that new magi will be born (when one mage dies, their energy is passed to a newborn). The Arcane Academy in Minar was established two hundred years ago to try and contain all Magi in one supervised area, and children are often sent there as soon as they begin to display any arcane abilities.
Many potential students are never sent to Minar, whether it be because of power and privilege or neighbours looking the other way. There are also many travelling magicians who make their way through the world peddling flashy spells to bored villagers, but they know that they must always move on to the next village, nobody wants them settling down next door.
The only magi that really gain any respect in Rohir are those that are granted the title of Wizard by the Arcane Academy. These wizards are the most powerful of their kind, and it is understood that they have total control over their abilities. Though commoners might still view them with a bit of fear, everybody knows that these wizards will be required to prevent any apostates from creating another Day of Fire. Many wizards have taken up residence in various courts in the Empire and Kingdoms, while others prefer to roam the countryside, looking for new apprentices.
