Aldarian Empire

Val'Aris

As the largest single political entity in Rohir, many view the Aldarian Empire as strong and permanent as the land itself; but in reality the Empire is far from stable. Power in the  Empire is divided between seven Great Houses that exist in an uneasy alliance. Power is centralised in the capital city of Val'Aris (also known as The Shining City), and the seven Daimyo spend much of their time there maneuvering for political advantage.

Rather than a strict hereditary system of succession, each Emperor/Empress 'adopts' the eldest child from each of the seven houses. These children are all raised together, trained in statecraft and military matters – until one is chosen on their 18th birthday to be the heir to the throne. The other children are then trained in specific roles to serve as the next emperor/empresses advisers. While the system does have many detractors who would like to see a traditional system implemented (with their family in charge of course), it seems to have worked quite well. Any house that tries to game the system will immediately be attacked by the other six houses, so all seven have a vested interest in maintaining the status quo.
